چکیده

The aim of this study is to develop novel composite coagulants that are versatile and effective in removing natural organic matter from water. Herein, novel polyaluminum chloride-chitosan composite coagulant was prepared by combining the two reagents at different chitosan/aluminum ratio. The coagulation performance was tested using two different water sources (synthetic water containing 10 mg.L dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and water samples from Myponga reservoir) in a conventional jar test apparatus. Test using synthetic water showed that DOC removal was more favourable at pH ≤ 6 while opposite behaviour was observed for natural water. For synthetic water samples, both polyaluminum chloride (PACl) and PACl-chitosan composite coagulant demonstrated similar maximum DOC percentage removal of approximately 80±5 % whereas the best DOC removal efficiencies for water samples from Myponga reservoir was approximately 40±5% at 4.32 mg Al.L. For synthetic water sample, the composite coagulant was able to achieve the same removal efficiency as PACl at a lower Al dose. Sizing analysis shows that chitosan aids in polymer bridging which leads to an increase in the floc size, thereby improving its removal. Further analysis using resin fractionation and high performance size exclusion chromatography were performed to elucidate how differences in the organic character of the two water samples affects their removal. The results showed that NOM in synthetic water was easier to be removed by coagulation in comparison to natural water. This is because of the different sizes and constitution of NOM between synthetic (contains high aromatic content and large molecular weight) and natural (contains higher aliphatic content and lower molecular weight) water.

Treatment of Highly Turbid Water by Polyaluminum Ferric Chloride (PAFCL)

Background & Aims of the Study: In some situation like rainfall seasons raw water become very turbid so it affected the water treatment plant processes and quality of produced water. Treatment of very high turbid water has some concerns like precursors for disinfection by-products and very loading rate of particle on filter's media and consequently increases in water consumptio...

Enhanced coagulation for high alkalinity and micro-polluted water: the third way through coagulant optimization.

Conventional coagulation is not an effective treatment option to remove natural organic matter (NOM) in water with high alkalinity/pH. For this type of water, enhanced coagulation is currently proposed as one of the available treatment options and is implemented by acidifying the raw water and applying increased doses of hydrolyzing coagulants. Both of these methods have some disadvantages such...

Chitosan as a Drinking Water Treatment Coagulant

Inorganic aluminum or iron salts have been used for many decades to coagulate colloidal particles in surface water prior to flocculation, sedimentation and/or filtration. Although effective, inorganic coagulants have several disadvantages including large chemical dosages required for treating eutrophic waters, large volumes of chemical sludge produced, and toxic effects of metallic coagulants o...

Comparison of a novel polytitanium chloride coagulant with polyaluminium chloride: coagulation performance and floc characteristics.

Polymerized inorganic coagulants are increasingly being used in the water supply and wastewater treatment process, yet there is limited research on the development of polytitanium coagulants. The aim of this study is to synthesize polytitanium chloride (PTC) coagulants and investigate their coagulation behavior and floc characteristics for humic acid removal in comparison to polyaluminum chlori...

The simultaneous removal of turbidity and humic substances from water using the enhanced coagulation process

This study aimed to investigate the efficiency of the enhanced coagulation (EC) process for the simultaneous removal of turbidity and humic substances (HS) from raw water from the Sanandaj Water Treatment Plant (SWTP). This study was conducted on a laboratory scale using a jar test device and ferric chloride (FeCL3) as the coagulant. Accordingly, the effects of pH and coagulant dosag...
